Mercer Island

Two bathrooms in Mercer Island, Washington.

A bathroom with a wall of stacked black tile, a freestanding white tub and a wood stool

The oldest project on this site, and the one that set the palette we still come back to: one dark material used at full height, and everything else quiet.

The tile is stacked vertically rather than offset, which reads calmer and shows every millimeter of the setting out. Against it, a white freestanding tub, black sinks on a white floating vanity, and a black hexagon floor that ties the two rooms together.

Nothing here is expensive for the sake of it. The drama is in the scale of one material and in the fact that the joints line up.

Photographs

Black tile behind the tub, and nothing else on the walls
A stool, a plant, and the floor running under the tub
From the door
One material, floor to ceiling, including the niche
The valve and the handset, set into the same tile
Nothing breaks the tile except what has to
Two basins, two mirrors, and the shower behind
The room is narrow, so the shower took the end of it
The basin sits on top, so the counter stays one piece
Two sinks, one continuous drawer line
Black on white, and nothing else
The hexagon floor runs through both rooms
A screen instead of a curtain, so the tile stays visible
