The house had good bones and forty years of bad decisions on top of them. The brief was not to modernise it but to put back the kind of kitchen it would have had, built properly.

So: green painted cabinetry with brass cup pulls, a checkerboard marble floor, patterned tile behind the range and open shelves instead of wall cabinets. The pantry is a single tall run in solid wood with the coffee machine inside it, because the counters had to stay clear.

Upstairs the bathroom takes the same logic. A copper roll-top tub on a patterned floor, brass everywhere, and tile laid in a pattern rather than a grid.
